Bubble chair 50 years today
Believe it or not, the Bubble chair has its 50th birthday today! It's still looking so modern and fresh. Eero Aarnio designed the Bubble in 1968 and today is the day when Eero made the first sketches.
According to Eero’s notes, the Bubble hangs from the ceiling because ‘there is no nice way to make a clear pedestal.’ It shares the same unique acoustics as the Ball Chair, a little cocoon that shields off the outside world. This is how Eero describes where the initial idea for the Bubble came from:
“I had the idea of a transparent ball, where light comes from all directions. Acrylic can be heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble, and I knew that dome-shaped skylights were made that way. I contacted a manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble big enough for my chair. They said yes.”
